Student Presentations and Leadership
Workshop

This agenda is an exemplar of a day-long workshop where students and teachers are guided through the day’s activities listed below. This event requires one person to facilitate.

This resource can be modified to suit the needs of the school or school board intending to host an Eco-workshop. Times listed are approximate and can be lengthened or shortened as needed. Welcome from facilitator: Welcome from the facilitator.  Introduction of the agenda and theme of the day (inspirational/motivational), encourage students to get the most out of the day.

Student presentation #1 by school team: Students take 10 minutes to present their EcoSchools achievements from the previous year.

Structured debrief by school: In their school groups, students get a chance to talk about the presentation, ask any questions, and jot down what ideas/inspiration was useful to helping their EcoSchools program at their school.

ACTIVITY 1: What are the characteristics of a great EcoTeam? Students break out into groups and brainstorm the question, then share with the larger group and work in their school teams to identify ways to develop these characteristics in their EcoTeam.

ACTIVITY 2: Linking Questions: Students get a deck of cards that have a question and an answer on them and they have to link them together.  Good for information sharing.

ACTIVITY 3: Hot Seat: Two school groups sit opposite each other at a table and share success stories and challenges they are facing as a team and receive suggestions and feedback.

ACTIVITY 4: Nuts and Bolts: Students brainstorm the nuts and bolts of an effective environmental campaign.

Debrief Nuts and Bolts: Students share ideas and strategies gathered in the nuts and bolts activity.

ACTIVITY 5: Planning time: School teams are given time and tools to plan their EcoSchool program this year (acknowledging that all EcoTeam members might not be present).  Students are encouraged to map out what meetings, assemblies, pd days they already know about on a timeline.

ACTIVITY 6: EcoSchools Goal letter: This is a personal letter the students write to themselves about a goal they wish to achieve in the next few months. The letter is then sealed and given to the lead teacher to re-distribute in 3-4 months.

ACTIVITY 7: Closing – Earth ball toss: Students stand in a circle and have the opportunity to share what they gained from the day’s workshop.  Students raise their hand if they wish to contribute and throw the ball to the next participant when done. Very inspirational.
