First of all, I want to thank you guys for supporting Take Me Outside's run across Canada and Take Me Outside Day!
I'm really sorry that I couldn't come to your school and meet you guys, but Canada is a massive country and I could only visit so many schools in the time I had to run. Anyway, Katie has filled me in on some of the things you guys are doing as a school, and it sounds amazing! I love the "sweater day" idea! We should try to get other schools doing that as well!
I've had to recently finish some school work myself, so Take Me Outside has had a little break. But one thing I'm thinking is that with all the great stuff you guys are doing, maybe take Me Outside can showcase some of it on our website and on facebook so other schools can maybe follow some of your great ideas! I'll be in touch with your teachers to see if we can make this happen!
The message that I'm passionate about is getting students outside... did you know that teenagers are spending about 53 hours a week in front of screen?! That's over 7 hours a day! All of this screen time is leading to things like increased obesity, diabetes, and poor health. So in my opinion, the name of the game is balance! The internet is amazing for learning stuff and video games are way cooler than when me and Katie were growing up!
So we should enjoy the technology that we're so lucky to have... but we have to make sure it doesn't rule our lives, and that we remember some of the other important things in life... like spending time outside!
Did you know that the more time you spend outside, the better your grades will be in school?!
True story!!
And there are so many other amazing benefits of spending time outside!
So as the summer approaches, I hope you guys have some fun stuff planned for how you're spending your summer... and that some of that time, or a lot of that time, is spent outside!
Right now, I'm living out in the mountains in Alberta and every day, I get to walk my dog in the trails and go running through the mountains... it's pretty awesome! We're pretty lucky to live in the country that we do... it has one of the best backyards in the world!
So we should do our best to take care of it and go out and enjoy it!
If I'm ever back in Ontario, I would love to come to your school and meet you...
Enjoy the rest of the school year and congrats on being such an amazing school who is so committed to being a good example of how we should treat this Earth!
